A painting by Fritz Hirschberger, called Deutsche Kammermusik, which shows Jewish prisoners at Auschwitz playing the violin.
At the Auschwitz II-Birkenau extermination camp, some of the world’s finest musicians were forced to perform for the amusement of the Nazi SS guards, while the guards’ Jewish victims were tortured and gassed. Hirschberger’s wife’s cousin, like Juliek in Night, played the violin in one of the death-camp orchestras at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
