- Description
In the work series for the exhibition "Ranks" -- include "Red Figures", "Mercenary", "Judgement", and "Van Gogh", HU JianPing attempted the assess the roles and constitutions of art, particularly with canons of art. Should art approach mundane life -- like the motif of Western Pop art? Or should it be held more remote and restrained, recalling the arts by Italian Renaissance painter Michelangelo? What are the gains and losses, advantages and dangers of each? How is today's art realm reacting to the two types of art representations? And what are the implications of the reactions? Questions like these inspired HU JianPing to conjure this series works, and to seek answers to the questions among them. (HU, A few notes on my works -- "Ranks", 1993, available on ZHOU Document) (Jerry Wu'23).
