The Negro and the Elective Franchise was a collection of essays and a sermon published by the American Negro Academy in 1905. The American Negro Academy was an organization of black scholars and intellectuals that operated from 1897 to 1924. Archibald H. Grimké (1849-1930), author of this essay, was born enslaved and was freed as a result of the Civil War. Grimké was the president of the American Negro Academy from 1903 to 1919.
