A window display at the Bonwit Teller department store with artwork by Robert Rauschenberg, 1957.

Rauschenberg and many other pop artists first earned their living as commercial artists designing billboards, window displays, and print ads. The visible paint drips and patchwork effect of different surface textures in Rauschenberg’s painting, hung behind the mannequins, are characteristic of his mixed-media works.
