An excerpt from a report from Illinois Governor Thomas Ford reporting on “Mormon difficulties,” December 1846.
In this document, Governor Thomas Ford reports to the Illinois Senate on the situation around Nauvoo, Illinois, summarizing the conflict between Mormons and anti-Mormons in Illinois from the fall of 1845 to the end of 1846. He documents vigilante violence and loss of property experienced by the remaining Mormon settlers, most of whom are planning to move west as soon as they could outfit themselves for the trail.
