This collection uses primary sources to explore Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.

This German poster featuring Jack Johnson, the first black world heavyweight boxing champion, advertises a film of his 1910 fight with Jim Jeffries. The Johnson-Jeffries fight was billed in the United States as pitting “the Negroes’ Deliverer” against the “Hope of the White Race,” and became known as the fight of the century. Johnson’s physical dominance over his white opponent challenged the supposed superiority of the white race. This German poster, created by a Hamburg company best known for circus advertising, makes no reference to the racial overtones of the match.

The first black world heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Johnson drew controversy not only because of his physical dominance over white boxers but also because of his lavish lifestyle and multiple marriages to white women.

This photograph shows Booker T. Washington in his office at the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. Under Washington’s leadership, the school focused on industrial and agricultural training for African Americans. Washington delivered his famous "Atlanta Compromise" speech in 1895 at the Cotton States Exposition. The speech outlined his "accommodationist" approach to southern race relations, seeking to find common ground between those who didn’t believe in equality between the races but still supported some forms of African American improvement and reformers who sought full equality for African Americans in American life.

*The Negro Motorist Green Book*, 1950.

First published in 1937 by Victor H. Green & Company, *The Negro Motorist Green Book* provided African American travelers with a national guidebook for navigating segregated facilities on US highways, including hotels, restaurants, and gas stations. The Green Book (later renamed *The Negro Travelers’ Green Book*) became an essential reference for African Americans to travel more safely and comfortably during the Jim Crow era, when black travelers were regularly denied services, treated with hostility, and threatened with physical harm simply for seeking accommodations, food, or gas from white providers. The guidebook included recommendations and warnings for every state, highlighting the fact that racism made travel dangerous across the country, not just in the segregated south. This edition of the Green Book would have been one that readers of *Invisible Man* in 1952 might have referred to for their own travels. The last guidebook was published in 1966.

This poster is typical of blackface minstrelsy, in which white (or sometimes black) actors darkened their faces and performed exaggerated variety-show routines, including musical and dance numbers, for comical effect. [Blackface minstrelsy](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sets/blackface-minstrelsy-in-modern-america) developed in the early nineteenth century and continued to influence popular culture during the Jim Crow era that Ellison depicts in *Invisible Man*. Performances centered on scenes of the plantation South, featuring grotesque caricatures of African American types such as the “Sambo” and the dandy.

This particular image portrays Neil O'Brien (circa 1868-1954), the leader of "Neil O'Brien's Great American Minstrels.” O’Brien, in blackface, sits alongside a railroad track and inspects the large hole in his boot while he scratches his head. The caption at bottom reads "It's a long way to Alabama.” O'Brien began his career in Lew Dockstader's minstrel troupe, became a solo act after 1913, and then founded his own troupe.

This 1921 collage of newspaper clippings by the Henry Romeike clipping service includes a variety of articles discussing Marcus Garvey and his ideas about African American social development. Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and advocated for Pan-Africanism and the back-to-Africa movement for American blacks. Born in Jamaica in 1887, Garvey came to the United States in 1916 after being influenced by Booker T. Washington’s ideas for African American improvement through manual training. He was a popular speaker in New York City and around the country. He clashed with other African American leaders like W. E. B. Du Bois, who believed in the necessity of fighting for social equality in the United States.

A 1939 memo about “The Negro Population of Philadelphia and Sub-Standard Housing Conditions.”

This memo from is dated October 25, 1939, and comes from the Urban League of Philadelphia, a local chapter of the National Urban League, an organization founded "to enable African Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights." The memo outlines key statistical differences between white and black Philadelphians, particularly with regard to housing. The memo makes clear that African Americans were disproportionately living in substandard conditions, and paying higher rents, with profound implications for health and crime. It suggests that contemporary housing policy did not address the issues facing black residents and that more would have to be done to address systemic inequalities.

William H. Johnson’s painting *Moon over Harlem* commemorates the Harlem Riot of 1943. The riot began after Robert Bandy, an African American soldier, witnessed a black woman's arrest for disorderly conduct in a hotel. Police claimed Bandy assaulted the officer, who then shot Bandy as he fled. Bystanders mistakenly reported that Bandy died at the hospital, leading to two days of protests and the destruction of white-owned businesses in Harlem. Residents were responding to longstanding conditions, including political disenfranchisement, employment discrimination, segregation in the US military, wartime food shortages, and police brutality by predominantly white officers.

William H. Johnson (1901-1970) was an African American painter born in Florence, South Carolina. He studied art at the National Academy of Design in New York City before moving to Europe, where he was influenced by modernist art and Scandinavian folk art. A collection of his paintings, watercolors, and prints is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

FBI Files on Ralph Ellison. In the twentieth century the Federal Bureau of Investigation monitored and targeted many artists, and prominent African American writers in particular, for communist beliefs, revolutionary sympathies, and/or other left-wing activity. This information was used by the House Un-American Activities Committee, created in 1938 to investigate people and organizations suspected of communist ties. HUAC became notorious for its “red-baiting” techniques, using Congressional powers to force innocent citizens and organizations to be questioned and pressured into (often falsely) identifying other potential targets.

A typed quotation from *Invisible Man*, signed by Ralph Ellison. This quotation, from the novel’s epilogue, asks what is lost when African Americans are expected to assimilate into the white mainstream. It takes on added resonance in the current era of “colorblind” rhetoric.

In 1966, Ralph Ellison testified on the topic of social conditions in Harlem in front of the Senate Committee on Government Operations’ subcommittee on executive reorganization. The committee was chaired by Senator Abraham Ribicoff, former governor of Connecticut. Ellison discusses coming to New York City during the Great Depression and learning to navigate where African Americans were and were not welcome. He also describes the difference between race relations in the rural South and race relations in the urban North.

In this interview, part of the Wyoming PBS program, “Main Street, Wyoming,” Todd Guenther, curator of the South Pass City (Wyoming) Historical Site, discusses African Americans in Wyoming through the lens of Ralph Ellison’s *Invisible Man*. In this conversation, Guenther details some of the overlooked history of African Americans in the US West in the nineteenth century.

1. Carefully read the “Battle Royal” scene in chapter one of *Invisible Man* and study the [poster of the boxer Jack Johnson](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sources/1607) and the [photograph of Jack Johnson and wife](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sources/1608). How do these texts show black masculinity on display for white viewers? For other black men? How do white women function as symbols of America? 
2. Study the [photograph of Booker T. Washington](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sources/1609). How does the photograph represent Washington, through clothing, decor, and body language, as a respectable and non-threatening person? Now compare the photo to Ellison’s description of Dr. Bledsoe in chapter four of *Invisible Man*. How does Ellison depict Bledsoe? In what ways are the two leaders similar? How are they different?
3. Read the [first chapter of *The Souls of Black Folk*](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sources/1610) by W. E. B. Du Bois, concentrating on his description of double consciousness. How does the novel’s treatment of invisibility as a motif reflect Du Bois’s idea about life behind the veil?

What stereotypes does the poster rely on for its portrayal of blackness? Now consider the ad in relation to chapter thirteen of *Invisible Man* and consider how the narrator feels both trapped and liberated by his desire to eat a baked yam, a Southern comfort food. What do these moments suggest about African Americans’ awareness of racial stereotypes and white audiences’ reactions? Recently, the comedian Dave Chappelle walked away from his hit television show after growing uncomfortable with how some white audience members interpreted his comedy. Can you think of other examples of [blackface minstrelsy](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sets/blackface-minstrelsy-in-modern-america) re-appearing in popular culture?
5. Read through the [collage of newspaper clippings about Marcus Garvey](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sources/1613) and consider the ways in which Ras the Destroyer in chapter seven, as well as the narrator himself in chapter seventeen, echo some of these views in their public speeches in Harlem. What revisions does Ellison make, and to what effect?
6. In the painting [*Moon over Harlem*](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sources/1615), William H. Johnson depicts the same 1943 riot that Ellison fictionalizes in chapter twenty of *Invisible Man*. Johnson based his painted figures on photographs of rioters arrested by white officers, but made changes to the scene. Compare Ellison’s and Johnson’s treatment of the 1943 Harlem riots. What similarities do you see? What differences do you notice? How does each portray the causes of the rioting? 
7. Read the [excerpt from FBI files on Ralph Ellison’s communist activities](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sources/1616), and consider how the Brotherhood in the novel represents the promise of the American Communist Party. In what ways does the novel reveal Ellison’s increasing skepticism about the Party?

How might this quotation serve as a summary of the novel’s theme? How does it echo W. E. B. Du Bois’s concept of double consciousness? What does it make more visible?

Activity

1. For students: Using the [collage of newspaper clippings about Marcus Garvey](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sources/1613) as an example, ask students to create a collage of newspaper clippings from today’s newspapers related to a particular scene or theme from *Invisible Man*. Students should choose clippings that show how the issues from Ellison’s scene or theme are still relevant in today’s society. Students should then present their collages to the class with an oral report about how the clippings show the persistence of issues from Ellison’s work.
2. For students: Read the [*Negro Motorist Green Book*](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sources/1611) and watch the [excerpt from “Main Street, Wyoming”](https://dp.la/primary-source-sets/sources/1619) on the hidden history of African Americans in the Western states. Write a new scene for Ellison’s novel in which the narrator travels to the American West. What lesson(s) might he learn about black history from that imagined journey?

Overview

Ralph Waldo Ellison (1913-1994) was born and raised in Oklahoma City. After twice applying to the Tuskegee Institute, the university founded by Booker T. Washington, he was admitted in 1933 to play trumpet in the orchestra. At Tuskegee he studied classical music, but quickly cultivated a love of modernist literature. In 1936, before completing his degree, he left to move to New York City. There he met Langston Hughes, who introduced him to black literary Harlem and communism. During World War II, after writing and editing for communist publications, he grew disaffected with the Communist Party leadership, as did his friend Richard Wright. Ellison began writing *Invisible Man* shortly thereafter. 

Published in 1952, *Invisible Man* was identified as a masterpiece and quickly became a best-seller. It is consistently lauded as one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. The Modern Library ranked *Invisible Man* nineteenth on its list of the one hundred best English-language novels of the twentieth century. Arguably no other book has been as influential on contemporary American literature. 

*Invisible Man* follows its unnamed narrator as he journeys from the rural South to bustling Harlem, experiencing the barriers created by the color line in twentieth-century American life. The novel borrows heavily from jazz and blues forms as its narrator encounters fictionalized versions of major African American leaders like Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey. Alternately comic and tragic, the novel explores the psychological effects of racism across U.S. social institutions, geographies, and social classes. 

Despite the critical and popular success of the novel, by the 1960s and 1970s Ellison was criticized by student activists for his approach to social change. He never published another novel in his lifetime, although two versions of his two-thousand-page unfinished manuscript were published posthumously as *Juneteenth* (1999) and *Three Days Before the Shooting...* (2010).
