A print from Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper depicting African Americans en route to Kansas via St. Louis, 1879.
This illustration shows four scenes of the Exoduster experience in St. Louis. Thousands of Exodusters traveled through St. Louis en route to Kansas, particularly during the spring of 1879. Most arrived by steamboat on the Mississippi River from Mississippi, Louisiana, and elsewhere in need of food, shelter, and assistance getting the rest of the way to Kansas.
