The Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO), which administers the Empire State Digital Network (ESDN), the DPLA Service Hub in New York, is seeking an experienced manager to coordinate and manage its hub-related activities.

We thought the DPLA community might be interested in a few stats we’ve gathered about our partners and their collections at the six-month mark. We’re still building, growing, and testing, but the numbers give some insight into where we’re content-rich and where we might consider focusing our development efforts.

The DPLA model revolves around collaborating with many partners who contribute content and metadata to the DPLA—and, as a result, users, libraries and public institutions across the country. The DPLA is continually adding new service partners and extending our reach in establishing a fully representative, national network. This past October, the DPLA welcomed the North Carolina Digital Heritage Network (NCDHN) into its community of partners and users—adding more than 123,000 items into our collection.

In a workshop led by members of the DPLA Legal Committee, which includes Jason Schultz (NYU Law) and David Hansen (Berkeley Law & UNC Law), and in conjunction with Argyri Panezi (European Univ. Institute) and Meredith Jacob (American Univ., Washington College of Law), a full room of DPLA Fest 2013 workshop participants explored the broad range of copyright issues that affect the online availability of library collections.

At this year’s DPLAfest opening reception on October 24, the three main elements of the DPLA model were re-iterated to the audience: that it is a portal, a platform, and a principle of open access for the public. These ideas were touched upon independently throughout the October 25 workshop series, as you can see in the conference live notes: it’s use as a portal in relationship to community outreach, or it’s use as a platform in emerging technological advances using our open access API, among other topics. However, these three DPLA missions really merged together in the discussions surrounding content.

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) announced today that it has received a $990,195 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to build upon its network of library professionals and organizations to pilot a national-scale training system for public librarians.

The DPLA is pleased to announce it is partnering with the David Rumsey Map Collection to provide online access to tens of thousands of significant historical maps and imagines.

This week’s digest covers the new U.S. National Archives website called “The Digital Vaults,” a speech from the House Judiciary Committee concerning a review of the U.S. copyright law, Simon & Schuster’s library ebook pilot, the Library of Congress’s special Grammy Award, and New York City’s protests against the sale of libraries.
