DPLA receives $1.5 million grant from Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is pleased to announce that the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has awarded DPLA a $1.5 million grant. The grant will enable DPLA to expand its efforts to provide an improved ebook experience for libraries and their patrons, building on its cultural heritage aggregation program.

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is excited to announce the publication of twenty new Primary Source Sets. These sets explore new topics in US history, literature, arts, world history, and science and technology and provide rich new primary sources from libraries, archives, and museums across the country that are classroom-ready for students and educators alike.

Together with the ten returning members of the Education Advisory Committee, new members will work in collaboration with DPLA staff to create and deliver curriculum for professional development using DPLA and its resources and expand the primary source sets project.

DPLA to Expand Access to Ebooks with Support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

The Digital Public Library of America is thrilled to announce that the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has awarded DPLA $1.5 million to greatly expand its efforts to provide broad access to widely read ebooks. The grant will support improved channels for public libraries to bolster their ebook collections, and for millions of readers nationwide to access those works easily.

Announcing the launch of RightsStatements.org

The Digital Public Library of America and Europeana are proud to announce the launch of RightsStatements.org, developed in partnership with Creative Commons, Kennisland and key stakeholders of the DPLA and Europeana networks. RightsStatements.org is a collaborative approach to rights statements that can be used to communicate the copyright status of cultural objects.

New Primary Source Sets for Education

Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is very pleased to announce the release of its first group of Primary Source Sets about topics in US history, literature, and culture. These sets were developed and reviewed by a new Education Advisory Committee for use by students and teachers in grades 6-12 and higher education. Each set includes an overview, ten to fifteen primary sources, links to additional resources, and a teaching guide. This project was generously funded by the Whiting Foundation.

DPLA Receives $250,000 from Anonymous Donor to Expand Technical Capabilities

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is thrilled to announce that an anonymous donor has committed to provide substantial support towards DPLA’s mission in the form of a $250,000 grant to strengthen DPLA’s technical capabilities. This grant will allow DPLA to expand its technology team to handle additional content ingestion and to implement important new features based around its platform and website.

New Self-Guided Curriculum for Digitization

Through the Public Library Partnerships Project (PLPP), DPLA has been working with existing DPLA Service Hubs to provide digital skills training for public librarians and connect them sustainably with state and regional resources for digitizing, describing, and exhibiting their cultural heritage content. Through the project workshops, we used this curriculum to introduce 150 public librarians to the digitization process. Now at the end of the project, we’ve made this curriculum available in a self-guided version intended for digitization beginners from a variety of cultural heritage institutions.
