Towards access for all: Introducing The Palace Project

Yesterday we shared the news that we and our partners at LYRASIS have created The Palace Project to develop and scale a robust suite of content, services, and tools for the delivery of ebooks, audiobooks, and other digital media to benefit public libraries and patrons. DPLA seeks new members to expand Curation Corps (closed 9/9/21)

DPLA is offering opportunities for library professionals and students to join our Curation Corps. The DPLA Curation Corps is a group of librarians and information professionals who help to curate our Open Bookshelf offering of public domain and other freely accessible ebooks, as well as assist in creating books for DPLA’s ebook projects. DPLA relies on the expertise of the library community to create collections patrons will love. Curation Corps tasks and working sessions vary depending on current project needs. Open Bookshelf is generously funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Orbis Cascade Alliance contributes new collections to DPLA

Digital Public Library of America is pleased to announce that more than 50,000 new cultural heritage artifacts from the Orbis Cascade Alliance are now available at dp.la. The Orbis Cascade is a consortium of 37 academic libraries in the Pacific Northwest. The Alliance’s first hub submissions include cultural resources contributed by member institutions in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.

DPLA signs agreement with Amazon Publishing to make their ebooks available to U.S. libraries

Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is pleased to announce that we have signed an agreement with Amazon Publishing to make all of the approximately 10,000 Amazon Publishing ebooks and audiobooks available to libraries and their patrons through the DPLA Exchange, the only not-for-profit, library-centered content marketplace. This marks the first time that ebooks from Amazon Publishing have been made available to libraries. Like our previous publisher arrangements, this agreement furthers our mission to expand equitable access to ebooks and audiobooks while protecting library patron privacy.

This new service, provided in partnership with Digital Divide Data (DDD), gives libraries the ability to easily and affordably digitize and reformat texts to create ebooks in EPUB format from print materials that are in the public domain or for which the library owns the copyright.

DPLA launches Black Women’s Suffrage Digital Collection

Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is pleased to announce the launch of its new Black Women’s Suffrage Digital Collection. The collection makes freely accessible nearly 200,000 artifacts, including images, videos, letters, diaries, speeches, maps, diaries, and oral histories, from DPLA’s more than 4,000 partner institutions that document the contributions and experiences of Black women during the women’s suffrage movement as well as Black women’s activism from the 1850s to the 1960s.

DPLA announces new partnerships with five libraries and archives to build national digital Black women’s suffrage collection

Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) today announced a set of partnerships with the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library; Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture in Charleston, South Carolina; Tuskegee University; the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University; and Southern California Library to collaborate on the creation of a national digital collection that highlights the roles and experiences of Black women in the women’s suffrage movement, as well as Black women’s history of activism, as part of the centennial celebration of the passage of the 19th Amendment.
