I just returned from several days in Philadelphia where I attended the American Library Association Midwinter conference. About 7,000 folks attended Midwinter, but that’s nothing compared to ALA Annual, which typically brings upwards of 30,000 people together to think and talk about libraries, open access, privacy, maker spaces, technology, and information provision and consumption. Always fascinating, the Philly conference was no different.

This post explores the diversity of groups represented in DPLA’s collections and partnerships.

Although we’re a digital project, we obviously consist of human beings with a distinctly non-virtual existence, and we are very lucky to have a daily presence in the first municipal public library in America, the Boston Public Library.

We are so pleased to announce our first class of DPLA Community Reps–volunteers who engage their local communities by leading DPLA outreach activities. We received an overwhelming response to our call for applicants and were able to admit 100 people into the the first class.

We thought the DPLA community might be interested in a few stats we’ve gathered about our partners and their collections at the six-month mark. We’re still building, growing, and testing, but the numbers give some insight into where we’re content-rich and where we might consider focusing our development efforts.

The Digital Public Library of America has submitted a comment to the FCC outlining how DPLA’s infrastructure can enable public libraries to modernize their digital services and overall mission.

It’s not very often you get to build a new library. Together, that’s what we will begin to do today.
