We’re closing out 2021 with two December events, a book talk with writer and researcher Tim Hwang about his work, Subprime Attention Crisis: Advertising and the Time Bomb at the Heart of the Internet, and the second annual virtual DPLA Holiday Open House. We hope you’ll join us for one (or both!); you can find out more information or sign up below.

We want your input: Since the pandemic hit 20 months ago, we’ve worked to bring our community together with nearly 40 virtual events, from our open board and community meetings to informational webinars to new programming like our casual “brown bag” gatherings and monthly book talks. As we head into 2022, we’d love to hear from you about what you’ve enjoyed and which topics interest you most. Please take a moment to let us know here. As a bonus, one lucky survey taker will win a $50 Bookshop gift certificate. The winner will be drawn at our Open House on December 16th. See you there!

Book Talk with Tim Hwang, author of Subprime Attention Crisis

On Thursday, December 9, at 11 am ET, we’re partnering with Unfinished, a new organization dedicated to strengthening civic life in the digital age, for a virtual book club event. Author Tim Hwang will join us for a conversation about his book, Subprime Attention Crisis: Advertising and the Time Bomb at the Heart of the Internet, which investigates the Wild West that is the online programmatic ad industry. Hwang calls it the “beating heart of the internet”—one that’s increasingly vulnerable thanks to a set of structural failures that call to mind the housing bubble of 2008.

How has the digital marketing economy shaped our experience of the internet today—from harmful surveillance practices to the hyperfragility of journalism and media—and how might we chart a better path forward? We’ll explore these urgent topics and more.

The conversation will be moderated by Unfinished Media Editor in Chief Damon Beres, with an introduction from DPLA Executive Director John Bracken.

Sign up for the Book Talk.

DPLA Virtual Holiday Open House

We invite all members of the DPLA community to join DPLA staff for our second annual holiday open house on Thursday, December 16th at 4 pm ET. This will be an informal gathering to catch up with friends and toast to our collective accomplishments in 2021. Hope you can join us!
