Indianapolis Selected to Host DPLAfest 2015, April 17-18, 2015
BOSTON & INDIANAPOLIS — The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is pleased to announce that Indianapolis, Indiana will serve as host city for its second-ever DPLAfest celebration, taking place on April 17-18, 2015. Area institutions serving as co-hosts to DPLAfest 2015 include the Indianapolis Public Library, the Indiana State Library, the IUPUI University Library, and the Indiana Historical Society. Indianapolis was chosen from an impressive roster of prospective host cities that submitted bids in summer 2014 as part of an open call for expressions of interest.
“We’re so excited to have the next DPLAfest in Indianapolis,” said Dan Cohen, DPLA’s Executive Director. “Among the many great aspects of their application to host the fest, we were struck by the wide range of the partners involved, which echoes the broad collaboration at the heart of the Digital Public Library of America. We look forward to joining hundreds of other attendees in Indy in the spring.”
DPLAfest 2015, a two-day public event set to coincide with DPLA’s second birthday, will bring together hundreds of people from DPLA’s large and growing community of librarians, archivists, and museum professionals, developers and technologists, publishers and authors, teachers and students, and members of the public for community-oriented public workshops, presentations, hackathons, engaging discussions with community leaders and practitioners, fun events, and more. Taking place in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, DPLAfest attendees will enjoy easy access to hundreds of restaurants, attractions, and nightlife options, including the nation’s largest urban state park, James Beard Award recognized chefs, and world‐class cultural amenities.
“In true ‘Indy’ fashion, our organizations have been working collaboratively on digitization efforts for several years now and the opportunity to host this important conference together is both an honor and a joy,” said Indianapolis Public Library CEO Jackie Nytes.
The first DPLAfest, held in October 2013, was co-hosted by the Boston Public Library, Northeastern University’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Starting in Indianapolis in 2015, DPLAfest will feature workshops on digital techniques and topics, in addition to its familiar array of engaging presentations, hands-on activities, and open, collaborative public discussions. DPLAfest 2015 will also offer public sessions devoted to local Indianapolis culture and history, as well as updates on projects currently going on at local cultural institutions.
Further information about DPLAfest 2015 programming will be made available in the coming months, including ways for members of the public to pitch workshop ideas, suggest discussion topics, and volunteer to lead sessions.
