The American Library Association’s (ALA) annual Midwinter conference is right around the corner, so we here at the DPLA have pulled together a nifty little schedule of talks, panels, and presentations that feature members of our staff, Board, Committees, and Hubs. Sessions involving DPLA staff are marked [S], while sessions involving Board, Committee, or Hub members are marked with [A], for ‘affiliate’.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 23
[S][A] OITP Advisory Committee Strategy and Planning Meeting I

The ALA Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) advocates for public policies that support and encourage efforts by libraries to ensure free and open access to electronic information resources. DPLA Assistant Director for Content Amy Rudersdorf and DPLA Service Hub representative Jason Kucsma (New York) serve as members of the OITP Advisory Committee. The Library Company of Philadelphia will be hosting Philadelphia’s first National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) Meeting, to be held on January 23rd and 24th in 2014. Speakers will include DPLA Director for Content Emily Gore, along with a talk about the National Agenda for Digital Stewardship (identifies and communicates the challenges, opportunities, and priorities for digital preservation activities in the United States) and other lightning talks themed on standards for digital preservation. Registration is required.

Interested in building with the DPLA API? Then come to LibHack! LibHack is a library hackathon that will work with the DPLA and OCLC APIs to provide opportunities for beginning, intermediate, and advanced programmers to create something and improve their coding chops. All are welcome to attend: librarians and non-librarians, programmers and non-programmers, designers, metadata people, and project managers, to name a few. While LibHack coincides with ALA Midwinter, the doors are open to anyone who’s interested in participating. A panel, which includes DPLA Content Strategy Committee member Peter Brantley, will focus on authors in the digital age and their concerns. [S][A] Metadata Interest Group Meeting: “Harvesting and Normalization at the Digital Public Library of America: Lessons from a Diverse Aggregation”

Hosted by the Metadata Interest Group of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, this two-part program will discuss strategies and workflows for and challenges associated with large-scale metadata aggregation. The second-half of the program will feature members of the DPLA community, including Kristy Berry Dixon (Digital Library of Georgia), Sandra McIntyre (Mountain West Digital Library), and Amy Rudersdorf (DPLA Assistant Director for Content). The talk will introduce and outline the challenges of aggregating disparate metadata flavors from the perspective of both DPLA staff and representative hubs. Panelists will review next steps and emerging frontiers as well, including improvements to normalization at the hub level and wider adoption of controlled vocabularies and formats for geospatial metadata and usage rights statements. Finally, they will share plans for implementing Linked Data throughout the aggregated national network and discuss how that will expand opportunities for DPLA and its partners.
[A] Libraries Transforming Communities: An Initiative Update

The “Libraries Transforming Communities” initiative was announced at the 2013 ALA Midwinter Meeting and over 300 library leaders have participated in training and utilized community engagement tools to support their efforts. In this session, ALA Immediate Past President and DPLA Marketing and Outreach Committee member Maureen Sullivan and Harwood Institute President Richard Harwood will share the latest examples of impact from librarians trained during phase one who are successfully applying the Harwood practice in libraries and within the ALA community. They will also provide details and answer questions about exciting new opportunities for librarians to increase the effectiveness of their library-led community engagement and innovation.

Join IMLS Director Susan Hildreth (DPLA Marketing and Outreach Committee) and Maura Marx (former Director of the DPLA planning phase Secretariat) of the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services for a brief update on IMLS programs and partnerships. Staff from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will discuss its collaboration with the IMLS. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity for small group discussion with individual IMLS staff about current or potential programs.

“Top Technology Trends” is LITA’s (Library and Information Technology Association) premier program on changes and advances in technology. DigitalLearn.org is the new online hub for digital literacy including a collection of self-directed trainings for end-users to increase their digital literacy and a community of practice for digital literacy trainers to share tools, best practices, and more. Join DPLA Board of Directors member Jamie Hollier to learn about this resource and give feedback on the site to help us shape its future.

Led by DPLA Executive Director Dan Cohen, this session will provide an update on the DPLA, including growth in its collections and partnerships, and new initiatives and features. It will also include a discussion of ways for institutions and individuals to get involved in the DPLA. Following the presentation, DPLA staff will host a meet-and-greet where they will take questions from the audience and offer opportunities for one-on-one conversations.
