The Digital Public Library of America Receives Major Grant from Anonymous Donor

Boston, MA — The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is extremely excited to announce that an anonymous donor has stepped forward to provide substantial support towards its efforts. The $447,000 grant will allow the DPLA to accelerate its work of bringing together America’s collections and providing new pathways into them.

“This is an incredible vote of confidence in our mission, especially during this important early stage of our development and in the lead-up to our fall DPLAfest, which will bring together so many to celebrate our April 2013 launch, recent milestones, and bright future,” said Dan Cohen, Executive Director of the DPLA.

“A large pledge of this sort so soon after our launch, from a donor who believes deeply in our work, is a special milestone,” Cohen added.

The DPLA, launched in April 2013, contains in its ever-growing collections more than 2.5 million items from libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions located across the United States. In addition to an innovative discovery portal offering interactive search by map and timeline, the DPLA provides an easy-to-use application programming interface (API) that allows software developers, researchers, and others to create novel environments for learning, tools for discovery, and engaging apps.
