The German Second Army under General Marwitz sought to trap British divisions and make a breakthrough to Amiens. However, after fierce fighting, the British forces held; the Germans had moved too far in too short of a period of time and the troops were exhausted. General Ludendorff called off the drive on Amiens and the battle ended April 5. By mid-August the Allies were prepared to go on the offensive, and after fierce fighting the armies recaptured Soissons, Mondidier, Lassigny, and finally Albert. less
