    Isaac Neff Ebey writes to his parents, Jacob and Sarah Ebey, to describe how he has heard unsubstantiated rumors from other pioneers who had recently arrived in California in September 1849 that his family was heading to Oregon. Ebey then describes a business venture he embarks upon to secure free passage by ship up the northwest coast. He describes his voyage undertaken in November as the ship makes its way up the coast and it's arrival in the Puget Sound on January 18, 1850. Ebey, unfortunately, discovers that his partner, Mr. Poe, does not meet him at the port with cargo that he was supposed to have purchased for Ebey to bring to California and sell. Instead, Mr. Poe has gotten ill. Ebey remains with the ship and describes the cost and type of cargo taken on board including, plank, cedar shingles, butter, wheat, vegetables and cheese.
