View of looking back toward the crater wall at a landslide and a heavy debris cloud that was moving towards us. Continual landslides in the inside of the crater made you feel very nervous, as if things were going to be collapsing and you could be covered up in this debris slide or flow. So we were continually looking for these landslides along the outside of the crater wall, which were still crumbling from the destructive explosion from 1980. The walls of the crater were very unstable and I am glad that we didn't have to climb in or out through these areas. Helicopters were much safer, but it was very nerve racking to be working inside and hearing these landslides coming down around you, and wondering if you were going to be covered up in them. less
