  • Harry Chapman (1882-1960) was one of Madison's most admired citizens. Mr. Chapman was the owner of the Democratic Printing Company. He started in the printing business at an early age, working in the shop started by his father, Alonzo Chapman, a newspaperman and writer of short stories.     Harry Chapman (1882-1960) was one of Madison's most admired citizens. Mr. Chapman was the owner of the Democratic Printing Company. He started in the printing business at an early age, working in the shop started by his father, Alonzo Chapman, a newspaperman and writer of short stories. Alonzo started the business in 1889 and produced a newspaper until 1917. When Harry Chapman took over the business, he no longer published a newspaper, but instead, headed a general printing company. Mr. Chapman also served two terms as Jefferson County Treasurer in 1946 and 1948. During World War II he was director of the Office of Price Administration. Picture taken circa 1930. less
