GEN. HENRY W. LAWTON ENTERED THE UNION ARMY AS A PRIVATE IN 1861, LEAVING FROM FORT WAYNE. HE HAD RISEN TO SECOND IN COMMAND OF THE ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES WHEN HE WAS KILLED IN THE BATTLE OF THE PHILIPPINES IN 1901. THE PHILIPPINES WERE CEDED TO THE U.S. BY SPAIN IN 1899, BUT CONTINUED GUERRILLA WARFARE UNTIL SUBDUED. A CANNON FROM THE ENGAGEMENT IS IN LAWTON PARK ON CLINTON STREET. REF.
