  • William T. Patterson, originally of Athens County, Ohio, served as a Quarter Master Sergeant with the 116th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In this diary excerpt he comments on the fall of the Richmond and observes -- in the vernacular of his day -- the attitudes of the runaway and soon-to-be-freed slaves his regiment encounters while moving across Virginia. Written outside of Richmond, Virginia.
