This home was identified as the Smith residence by Miss Fannie Alden (a descendent of John alden), whose family lived on the same street for several generations. Although small, the smith home was well built. The porch was a later addition. The home was torn down in 1967 so that an industrial park could be constructed on the site. In 1811, the Smiths moved onto a rented farm in West Lebanon, Lebanon Township, Hew Hampshire. During the winter of 1812 a typhoid fever epidemic swept through the Connecticut River Valley, afflicting hundreds of settlers in Vermont and New Hampshire. Seven-year-old Jospeh was initially ill for only two weeks, but then he suffered complications.
