Document related to the Canwell Committee hearings. This document is the Reed College Student Council’s resolution against the discharge of three University of Washington professors. Signed by Elihu Bergman, President of the council to Dr. Raymond B. Allen, President of the University of Washington, it states, “…we believe that this constitutes discrimination in employment by the state on the basis of affiliation rather than on the basis of individual ability, and is thus state censorship of political belief…we believe also that this violates the principle of academic freedom.” The resolution concludes by stating, “The action of the University of Washington regents represents a violation of these rights and sets a dangerous precedent. This precedent, if allowed to stand, would constitute a serious menace to our democratic tradition.”. less
