Love, Purity, Fidelity."Love, Purity, Fidelity" is the motto of the Sons of Temperance. The Sons of Temperance was a fraternal friendly society that originated in New York in September 1842 and spread to the United Kingdom in 1849. The society "aimed to provide sickness and death benefits, but also to shield its members from the evils of intemperance, to campaign against drunkenness, and to assist in every way the suppression of the alcohol trade." The order was very popular and counted three presidents of the United States among its members (Abraham Lincoln, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Ulysses S. Grant) (Source: Discovering Friendly and Fraternal Societies: Their Bades and Regalia by Victoria Solt Dennis, 2005). less
