The article features the importance of bamboo in the life of Southeast Asian people. Apart from being a great source of food, bamboos are raw materials in the production of various kinds of containers and handicrafts. The plant also conveys philosophical messages, as reflected in Zen philosophy. The author also illustrates the use of bamboo for musical instruments and in religious rites and ceremonies in Thailand.
