FROM CARD : "BLACK FIJI-LIKE BORDER, CENTRAL PORTION BROWN WITH GLAZED REDDISH BROWN LINES AND DOTS. NO FRINGE. THIS INFORMATION GIVEN BY K. P. EMORY, 6/24/41. MR. EMORY ALSO TOOK VERY SMALL SAMPLE.
Large rectangular thin tapa of medium texture made from approximately 30 sections of rectangularly shaped smaller pieces of tapa, presumably adhered together with arrowroot (per Curator for Oceania Ethnology Adrienne Kaeppler) This piecing is visible on the back side. The adhered pieces are of varying dimensions. Tapa is almost completely covered with applied designs on front. Large central design is a light brown fine linear repeating pattern of parallel short lines in various configurations, probably applied with a pattern board. This design has a more Samoan influence? Narrow dark shiny (glazed) applied lines define the central design into repeating large rectangles, and additional lines form large repeating diamonds and triangles. Additional design elements include dark brown circles. The wide decorative borders on the short sides (31 inches wide) have fine linear patterns in black and dark red made from multiple stenciled designs. These are more Fijian in design.
