  • Arthur Armstrong Denny was one of Seattle's founders and non-native settlers. He was born in Indiana on June 20, 1822. In 1851, he and his family crossed the country on the Oregon Trail to arrive in Portland. From Portland, they sailed to Alki Point and settled there.     Arthur Armstrong Denny was one of Seattle's founders and non-native settlers. He was born in Indiana on June 20, 1822. In 1851, he and his family crossed the country on the Oregon Trail to arrive in Portland. From Portland, they sailed to Alki Point and settled there. He was one of the major civic leaders of Seattle and served as the first postmaster of the city as well as a delegate to the Washington Territorial Legislature, a land comissioner, and a delegate to Congress. He also maintained amiable relations with local Native American tribes. He died in 1899. less
