In her letters, Batchelder provides a description of the internment camp, her experiences as a teacher in the camp and reflections on the internment process, writing "All of us who work here live the problem of the colonists with them. They are placed here because of the violence of prejudice on the West Coast (something we in the East know little about) and a large, expensive staff of Uncle Sam works in the Midwest and East to relocate them where they will not be unfairly treated and where they can enjoy the same rights and privileges which the rest of us take for granted.
