    Businessman and founder of Tacoma, Morton M. McCarver writes to L. M. Starr and James Steel of Portland, regarding investing in the construction a saw mill, the need for the Union Pacific Railroad to extend to Commencement City (Tacoma), and the importance of buying and settling land claims in Washington to form Commencement City. He mentions that the Bald Company is rebuilding a saw mill at Alki Point that had burnt down several years earlier. He believes that he and his partners, Starr and Steel, can create a rival mill that would aid their current interests in timber and the building of a city. McCarver enthusiastically hopes that individuals currently conducting the railroad survey for the Union Pacific Railroad will come north to see the city's site. He believes that they will invest in the area once they see how amenable it is for the creation of a city.
