In this letter to Graduate School Dean Edwin R. Guthrie, dated July 16, 1948, English department chair Robert Heilman requests that Dean Guthrie ask that the Canwell Committee require faculty to only attend hearings during times they are not scheduled to teach classes instead of requiring them to attend throughout the week. He writes, “[T]he enforced attendance of all faculty members throughout the week would eliminate one-fourth of the term’s work in each class.” He concludes saying, “I think the faculty would at least like to be in the position of having attempted to save the classes. If the Canwell Committee does not see fit to grant such a request, the responsibility for the courses will lie elsewhere.”. less
