This lantern slide shows two images: a YMCA facility and a portrait of John H. Sherrill, who graduated in 1899 from the International YMCA Training School, now known as Springfield College. The location of the facility shown is unknown. Sherrill served with the YMCA during the Spanish American War of 1898 and held YMCA General Secretary positions in Petersburg, Virginia (1900-1903), and Pensacola, Florida (1904-1911). According to the Association Seminar, “He originated the movement toward the systematizing of the charities of the city. He is the leading spirit in the School Improvement Association, and in the County Association of public school teachers. He is a member of the executive committee of the County Sunday School Organization. The control of the athletics in the four public schools has been turned over to the Association and self-government has been introduced into the schools by the Association. Although southern born and bred, Mr. Sherrill is the leading counselor and inspiration of the Young Men’s Progressive League, which is practically a colored Young Men’s Christian Association, of the city.” (March 1910). less
