  • Description
  • The United States Government introduced railway post offices on an experimental basis in 1862. Postal workers sorted letters and packages as the train sped along the tracks. Until the 1970s, trains carried most of the nation's intercity mail. This photo, taken around New Years Day 1944, two men load sacks of mail onto a Great Northern Railway post office car in Seattle.
