Original Caption: Hardening the nerves of U.S. soldiers with fake bombs. In training American soldiers the officers are trying to harden the nerves of the men. Bombs are exploded right under their feet during a charge. These bombs are not dangerous to the soldiers but simply make a lot of noise and form clouds of smoke. They are used to acclimate the soldiers to what they will most likely subsequently face. Photographer: Kadel and Herbert
