The second half of the pamphlet contains testimonial letters from residents of Illinois attesting to the viability for farming. The last four pages of the pamphlet include a statement of expenditures, receipts and profits of the farm of William P. West of Batavia for 1853, and statistics about selected towns in Illinois. Dimensions of the pamphlet are 8.5"x5.5"; it contains 64 pages. To encourage railroad construction in Illinois, Congress passed and President Millard Fillmore signed a land grant bill in 1850. Under this bill the Illinois Central Railroad was awarded alternate sections of land on both sides of the proposed rail route from Cairo in southern Illinois to Galena in the northwestern corner of the state and Chicago on Lake Michigan. In 1856, with the railroad complete, the Illinois Central Railroad published this pamphlet as a promotional piece to attract buyers for some of its land.
