    Washington Territory Governor, Isaac I. Stevens, writes to Captain George B. McClellan to describe the different parties in the Northern Pacific Railroad expedition from New Orleans to Puget Sound. Stevens informs McClellan that his party will be in charge of exploring the Puget Sound region with a scientific group including a scientist and an astronomer. Stevens reminds McClellan to collect enough data to describe the length and direction of any possible railroad routes.
