View Full Image
Wood and papier mache oval frame. Molded flowers at compass points; remnants of scallop molding on rim. Contains picture of Martha Washington wearing dark dress with white lace collar, cuffs and cap. She is seated at a table and holds a book. L 18" x W 16". The Frank Leslie's Illustrated News drawings of the Lincoln Home in 1861 show two oval portraits over the Front Parlor fireplace of Lincoln Home. Unfortunately, the portraits themselves are indistinct; so to re-create the appearance of the Home, portraits of President and Mrs. Washington were chosen. Many people had prints of people they admired in their homes and the Washingtons were one of the most popular subjects. Part of a set with George Washington (LIHO-170).
