  • Description
  • Famed as the greatest medieval city in sub-Saharan Africa. It was a Bantu city of 10,000 to 20,000 people and the capital of a kingdom that stretched across southeastern Africa. First occupants came in the 11th century; the structures of hand-hewn granite blocks were built in the 13th and 14th centuries. Emigration began in the 15th century and the city was nearly deserted by 1500.
