This payroll acknowledges that John B. Stanard, 1st Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers, paid certain Orange County, Virginia, slave owners for work performed by their slaves at the intermediate line of the defenses of Richmond Virginia, during January to March 1863. Slave owner James Willis provided a slave named Strother. Slave owner Uriel Terrell provided a slave named Thomas. Slave owner Ann S. Terrell provided a slave named Edmund. Slave owner Elhanon Row provided a slave named Ned. Slave owner James R. Tinder provided a slave named Henry. Slave owner Ferdinand Jones provided a slave named Mat. Slave owner John Willis provided slaves named Jim and Joe. The estate of slave owner N. C. Willis provided slaves named Louis and Ben. The estate of slave owner Reuben Macon provided a slave named Henry. Slave owner John W. Sale provided a slave named George. Slave owner William S. Cosby provided a slave named Louis. Slave owner Richard B. Moore provided a slave named Charles. Slave owner Alexander Peecher provided a slave named Dick. Slave owner Lucy H. Conway provided slaves named James and Jack. Slave owner Mrs. Sarah A. Boler provided a slave named Marcellus. Slave owner George W. Morton provided slaves named Dick and Ben. Slave owner John L. Woolfolk provided a slave named Aaron. John L. Woolfolk acknowledged receipt of payment for himself and George W. Morton. James Roach acknowledged receipt of payment for John W. Sale, William S. Cosby, Richard B. Moore and Alexander Peecher. James L. Robinson acknowledged receipt of payment for the other 11 owners.
