1864-09-26, Letter from Johannes Lefevre to his father Josiah P. Lefevre

Johannes writes this letter to his father fully describing the Battle of Winchester which occurred a week prior. Johannes feels lucky to have come out of this battle untouched since his company had suffered many casualties. He describes that he will never forget the “lion courage” of the officers and men in his regiment. His regiment was forced to lie down to refill their muskets because they were being hit with such heavy shell and canister that to stand up was “certain death”. Finally, after loosing many men, his regiment rallied for the third time and charged under fire from the Rebs. When more union cavalry charged the battle was won and the rebels defeated.
