    P.B Van Trump, along with Hazard Stevens, made the first documented, successful climb of Mount Rainier in 1870. In his speech, Van Trump describes the early history of Mount Rainier in the context of his experiences coming to the west coast from his home in Ohio, first in 1865 as a prospector in Montana, Idaho and Oregon and again in 1867 when Van Trump's brother-in-law, Marshall F. Moore, was appointed Governor of the Washington Territory. Van Trump accompanied Moore to Olympia as his secretary. He writes "From this prairie I got my first glorious view of the mountain, I might have said rapturous view, or used some other term with more force. That mountain vision impressed me so, enthused me so that the old desire to conquer some hitherto unconquered snow-cap again burned within me, and I then and there vowed that I would climb to the summit of that beautiful peak if it was possible to human pluck and endurance."
