The Republican party was reeling over the losses in the Maine gubernatorial and House elections. Maine was historically a Republican stronghold. Louis Brann defeated the Republican Burleigh Martin for the governorship. Democrats Edward C. Moran and John G. Utterback defeated their Republican competitors for seats in the House of Representatives. Berryman depicts the GOP elephant under the "black cloud" of the Maine losses. Dressed as nurses, Charles Curtis, Hoover's Vice Preisdent, and Everett Sanders, the Republican chairman, tried to nurse the party back to health. Herbert Hoover was shown giving instruction to Sanders about the treatment for the Republican party. Berryman also was trying to convey the personal responsibility Hoover took for the Republican losses in the 1932 campaign. less
