• Description
  • This xylophone from northwest Ghana is played by striking tuned wooden bars (with wood traditionally taken from the Shea Butter tree) with wooden mallets. Gourds of different sizes are cut and placed under the bars as resonators; these gourds have small holes cut in them and covered with a thin membrane, which produces the instrument's characteristic buzzing sound.
