The spade became an important element of the Ivy Planting Ceremony, which was part of the graduation festivities of many classes until about 1955. The spade was engraved with years ranging from 1903 to 1952, although not all years during this span are represented. The UW Alumni Association was formed in 1889 in order for past students to be able to continue supporting the university. The group was officially incorporated as a non-profit during the presidency of R. Bronsdon Harris and regular reunions were established as part of a larger effort to increase membership and participation. The reunions still happen and include luncheons and parties. Thanks to Harris' effort the UWAA is now one of the largest alumni associations in the. less
