Document related to the Canwell Committee hearings. This document is Edwin Harold Eby’s, Professor of Literature at the University of Washington, official statement to the Faculty Committee on Tenure and Academic Freedom, defending himself against their charges. Eby states in the first few pages his involvement with the Communist Party of America but claims, “The Communist Party did not require the defendant to deny membership, to use an assumed name, to take orders blindly or to carry out arbitrarily assigned work.” Eby also claims on page #5 that, “Membership in the Communist Part was completely ended in late 1945 or early 1946.” The remainder of the document consists of Eby defending himself against charges I-V of the Faculty Tenure Committee. At the end of the document Eby asks “that the charges be dismissed and that he be retained as a member of the Faculty.”. less
