Salmon fish wheel on the Columbia River, Oregon, ca. 1910
Fish wheels were utilized to catch adult salmon swimming upstream. Wooden and wire baskets, powered by the downstream current, scooped up fish and deposited them into a holding pen. This method of fishing was used on the Columbia River from 1879 to 1934.
