Adolph Hitler's stunningly rapid annexation of Austria in March 1938 sent shudders of fear throughout Europe, including Italy. Premier Mussolini of Italy had given his blessings to Hitler's coup, but at the same time warned Hitler and soothed the concerns of his Italian people that their frontiers would not be violated by Hitler's expansionist activities. Cartoonist Clifford Berryman shows Mussolini putting on a brave face for his countrymen as a smiling Hitler uses the German military goosestep to march off with captive Austria. Mussolini bravely announces that he planned the Austrian coup and Hitler carried it out, quite a stretch of the truth but perhaps important for his national ambitions. less
