He served as the first Chancellor of University of California, Los Angeles from 1951 to 1959. Rufus B. von KleinSmid (1875-1964) was the President of the University of Arizona from 1914 to 1921, and the President of the University of Southern California from 1921 to 1947. Von KleinSmid was responsible for the growth of the university prior to World War II, stepping down from the presidency at age 70 and becoming chancellor for life. The Interim Committee on Un-American Activities (Canwell Committee) operated from 1947-1949.
