  • The June 1912 eruption of Katmai was the largest in North America in the 20th century. 46,000 square miles of the surrounding area was covered in greater than 0.40 inch (1 cm) of ash.The Russian mission house [was next to] the Russian Orthodox Church at Kodiak, Alaska. The National Geographic expedition [1913-1919] members stayed at the mission house while in Kodiak. The Russian Orthodox Church at Kodiak was founded in 1793 and burned in 1943.
