    C. Edward Graves was an avid hiker and the first librarian at Humboldt State Teachers' College in Arcata, California. He would often take students out on hikes along with the college president, Dr. Ralph Swetman who also enjoyed hiking and nature. Graves founded the Friends of the Western Mountains in 1926 in an effort to promote interest in the natural beauty and history of the western mountains. In addition to the series of picture-letters which he wrote about trips he took while on vacation, Graves also offered lectures delivered with colored lantern slides and sometimes accompanied by music or poetry. less
