While President of the University of Washington he dealt with the Un-American Activities Committee and subsequently dismissed three professors for their affiliation with the Communist Party. He served as the first Chancellor of University of California, Los Angeles from 1951 to 1959. George E. Axtelle (1893-1974) received his degrees from the University of Washington (BS) in 1923, University of Hawaii (MA) in 1928, and the University of California (Ed D) in 1935. He later became a professor at Northwestern University (1935-1942) and at New York University from 1946 to 1959. His major works included those on John Dewey, for which Axtelle became to president of the executive committee of the John Dewey Society.
